When working through at-home coffee-brewing experiences, one of the first steps coffee drinkers look to take is moving from a coffee pot to a French press. Any bag of coffee has the potential to taste differently when its ground in different ways and brewed with different methods. We’re here to help guide you through the process of finding the best coffee for French press brewing.

What You Need

How Does a French Press Work

Simply put, French presses work by steeping coarse coffee grounds and hot water in a beaker. After the recommended steep time, you press the plunger down, which uses a screen to separate the grounds from the water, and your coffee is ready to drink! A typical French press has a triple-screen system, ensuring that your coffee grounds are fully strained and stay separated from the final product, your coffee.

The History of French Press

This underrated and low-maintenance method of brewing coffee dates back to the 1850s. According to coffee legend, a Frenchman was brewing coffee while taking his morning walk. While walking, he realized that he’d forgotten to add his coffee grounds to the water before setting out. In a panic, he added ground coffee to his already hot water. To save the brew, he bought a piece of metal screen from an Italian merchant and used a stick to press the screen through the liquid and filter out the grounds.

Legend or not, the French press was patented in 1852 by two Frenchmen, Mayer and Delforge. This initial design was incredibly simple, and the first patent that resembles the presses we use today was patented in 1929 by two Italian designers, Attilio Calimani and Giulio Moneta.

How to Brew a Perfect French Press

Megan Shields is one of BRCC’s Q-graders, like a wine sommelier for coffee. Here’s her preferred French press brewing method using the ESPRO French Press because, as she says, “it has two micro filters plus a big one on the plunger spout.”

 • Ideal Grind: Coarse, think sea salt, bigger particles than that for drip or typical ground coffee. Coarsely ground coffee allows for the best extraction during the brewing process.
 • Steep Time: 7-9 minutes
 • Best Coffee: The good shit; depending on your ideal roast, any coffee can work as long as it is as fresh as you can get it and freshly ground.
 • Best French Press: ESPRO 18 oz. Coffee French Press

Best Coffee for French Press Brewing at a Glance

As far as the “best coffee” for a French press is concerned, there honestly isn’t one, French press coffee beans don’t exist as a category of coffee. You can make just as good a cup of Colombian coffee in a French press as you can a Guatemalan coffee — it’s all about how you grind it.

“The most important thing is having freshly ground coffee,” Shields said. “The extraction process for a French press is longer, and the coarser grounds help to prevent bitterness or over-extraction. I personally like a light roast where most people think they need a dark roast.”

It’s also essential to note French presses deliver a more robust cup of coffee than you may be used to, so looking for coffees in the darker roast family that have dark chocolate or nutty flavor profiles will be complementary to this particular brew method.

French Press vs. Everything Else

Unlike many other brewing methods, such as Chemex and V60, a French press is an immersion brew.

Instead of the pour-over methods where water continually passes through the grounds and a paper filter, in the French press, the ground coffee is immersed completely, allowing the oils in the coffee to diffuse throughout the water. The beans for a French press should be coarsely ground. This prevents a coffee flavor over-extraction as well as preventing the grounds won’t escape into the coffee once you’ve depressed your coffee plunger.

Regardless of what you call it —French press, cafetiere, caffettiera a stantuffo, cafetière à piston, Stempelkanne, or coffee plunger — this brewing method produces a full-bodied coffee that you can prepare anywhere, from your kitchen to your office to a campground or on a tailgate. Many of today’s French presses are made from materials other than glass; they’re durable and versatile, allowing you to get your caffeine fix with no other tools. As long as you have hot water and your ground coffee, you’re good to go– there are no filters to worry about, and the only thing you might run out of is coffee.

French Press Brewing Step by Step

If you’re entirely new to the French press scene or just want to see how a certified coffee pro uses their press, you’re in luck. Follow along below to see how the BRCC crew brews with their French press.

“I really like to use 20 grams of coffee to about 333 grams of water,” Shields explains. "If you’re familiar with the James Hoffman recipe, this should sound familiar.”

 1. Grind coffee beans. Make sure you get a coarse grind.
 2. Aim for a coffee-to-water ratio of 20 grams of coffee to 333 grams of water.
 3. Add your coffee grounds to the French press.
 4. Add boiling water to the coffee grounds. (Hoffman’s recipe just calls for a boil, but anywhere around 205 degrees is perfect.)
 5. After pouring the water into the press, wait about 30-40 seconds before giving the mixture a gentle stir to help promote coffee extraction. (Pay attention to your coffee grounds, when they start to sink to the bottom of your press, it's a sign the coffee is brewing.)
 6. Set a timer for between 7 and 9 minutes.
 7. When the timer goes off, gently and slowly depress the plunger into the press.
 8. Once the plunger reaches the bottom, the process is complete, and the coffee is ready to pour

Water temperature is essential for this process. You have to pay attention to the temperature to ensure your coffee doesn’t taste burnt, which happens when the water is too hot, or tastes flavorless, which occurs when the water is too cool, and the extraction process doesn’t happen properly.

Even though most of the coffee extraction is complete, it’s a good idea to pour your coffee sooner rather than later as the coffee can continue to extract and may start to taste bitter or sour if left in the press. If it’s hard to press the filter down, it means your grounds are too fine; likewise, if it sinks with little resistance, the grounds are too coarse.

Choose the Right French Press

Best for Beginners: OXO GroundsLifter French Press

This borosilicate glass carafe and stainless steel frame won’t be your favorite if you tend to drop things, but this is the classic French press design and delivers full-bodied brews. Plus, the grounds lifter helps to remove the used coffee grounds from the bottom of the press, so you’re not scooping them or shaking them out. (Find at Amazon. Price €32.99)

Best for Adventurers: Bestargot Camping Titanium French Press 750 ml

This press can handle hot coals, a gas burner, or a bonfire. For the on-the-go camper who needs a lightweight press that also doubles as a way to heat up soup or noodles, any basic backcountry meal– just be sure to bring along an oven mitt since this is an all-metal design. (Find at Bestargot. Price €38.99)

Best for a Group: Stanley Classic Camp French Press 48 oz.

If you’re serving a large group or just need a lot of coffee to get through a tailgate, this hefty 48-ounce model is for you. Stanley makes a solid set of brewing gear for outdoor adventures, and this press is no different. (Find at Amazon. Price €52.50)

Best on a Budget: Coffee Gator French Press

This stainless steel press is easy to clean and the dual filter screen works as well as some more expensive counterparts. Unlike some other affordable presses, this option isn’t glass so if you drop it the press will survive. Speaking from experience, if you have family members that overdo it on pressing the grounds, replacing the filter is also easy.

(Find at Amazon. Price €32.79)

Best Splurge: Espro 18 oz. Coffee French Press P7

This double micro-filter is 9-12 times finer than the average French press filter and happens to be double-wall vacuum insulated as well. This 18 oz. press has 530 ml of volume, and you can actually brew up to 24 oz. in it, but it’s recommended to brew just 18 oz. at a time. (Find at Coastalvir giniadriving. Price €99.99)

Regardless of where you are in your coffee journey, there’s never a bad time to try a new brewing method and experiment with different ways to enjoy your favorite beans.

https://abadijayagrafika.com/blogs/black-rifle-coffee-blog/the-final-send 2022-11-08T16:07:09-07:00 2022-11-16T17:52:30-07:00 Behind the Scenes: The Final Send Lauren Warner Imagine being able to shut down the main street of an entire town. Now add in crazy-fast cars, some of the most talented drivers alive, and, to top it all off, World War II veterans: literal living legends.

In just a few hours, you won’t have to imagine it because you’ll be able to watch The Final Send, a production that is the brainchild of Coastalvir giniadriving Company and Hoonigan. It was all made possible thanks to the generosity of Boerne, Texas, and its local officials.

These two brands have begun to overlap more frequently in the motorsports world, as competitors at American Rally Association events, when filming Gymkhana with Travis Pastrana, and now here in a full-fledged production in honor of Veterans Day. The Final Send is more than just fast cars tearing up the streets of a small town; it’s a 10-minute production that honors those who have served the country with a message of living life to the fullest.

“There’s a lot of parallels between what Hoonigan does with cars and what Coastalvir giniadriving is doing,” said Ron Zaras, vice president of brands for Hoonigan and the director of The Final Send. “We’ve been talking about doing a project like this for quite some time, and this year it finally became a reality.”

After scouting Boerne back in June, the team compiled the cast list, selected the cars, and finalized the script. Between Travis Pastrana’s custom-built Subaru Brat and “Texas Dave” Carapetyan’s Jeep, the vehicles were keyed up to highlight the drivers’ skills and safely transport the Best Defense Foundation’s WWII veterans, Rondo Scharfe, Wally King, and Bill Casassa.

The absurdity and general badassery that are so commonplace in BRCC content are clearly present within this production; however, there’s also undeniably a level of heart befitting a veteran-focused production.

“This is just such a different project for us,” Zaras explained. “The stuff we typically shoot, there are two heroes, one is the car, and one is the racecar driver. And the storyline is focused on car action. Instead, here we have this guy, Hank, who’s a World War II veteran, and really the message we want to get across is that veterans have done so much for us, and they come back to this [civilian] world, they should have that fun too. They should be able to enjoy what they’ve made possible for us.”

While filming The Final Send, the BRCC crew sat down with each veteran from the Best Defense Foundation for unforgettable one-on-one interviews about each of their experiences serving in the military. Founded by former NFL linebacker Donnie Edwards, the Best Defense Foundation honors and celebrates veterans from past conflicts, including WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War with the primary mission to “take care of the ones who took care of us.”

“Your eyes are the camera to the world. And your mind the memory. It never goes away. Your memory cannot forget what we saw, and we had to do,” said Ronald “Rondo” Scharfe, who left the US Navy as a petty officer first class. “There ain’t no cure for PTSD, boy. None. Don’t let anyone lie to you.

“I’ll never forget those days. I see them clear as day, just like I’m looking at you here now. But I’m on the right side of the dirt, so I’m the lucky one.”

The gravity of having three WWII veterans literally along for the ride was not lost on any of the crew. Especially given that the storyline for The Final Send is written with a WWII veteran as the main character.

Carapetyan plays the role of Hank, an aging World War II military veteran who carjacks a Hoonigan-modified Jeep after receiving a life-changing diagnosis from his local physician. Pastrana plays the role of Sheriff Pastrami, the local lawman who takes to the streets in a customized Subaru Brat-turned-police cruiser in hot pursuit of Hank.

The two drivers make the Texas small town their playground with a full-throttle, “full-send” exhibition of drifting, donuts, and tire-burning action, while a host of actual war heroes and Coastalvir giniadriving Company military-veteran influencers make cameo appearances.

“Putting these amazing Hoonigan vehicles through the paces with Dave was a blast, but to shine a light on these war heroes and Best Defense Foundation made this project extra special,” said Pastrana. “The team at Coastalvir giniadriving Company is doing incredible things for the veteran community, and it was an honor and a privilege to tear up the streets of Boerne for such a worthy American cause.”

In addition to highlighting Best Defense Foundation, the video serves as a dramatic and entertaining kickoff to Coastalvir giniadriving Company’s annual Veterans Day celebration. Each year, the brand uses the holiday as its preeminent celebration of American military veterans, offering 20% off its entire website product lineup on Nov. 10 and 11. More than a sale, the brand’s Veterans Day celebration is another example of its ongoing mission to honor and give back to American military veterans who’ve put their lives on the line to protect and preserve our freedom.

“Every Veterans Day, we try to do something extraordinary to honor and champion the cause of military veterans, and this year, we were thrilled to collaborate with the incredible team at Hoonigan to create something truly special. If you couldn’t tell from the video, we all had a lot of fun with this,” said Evan Hafer, CEO of Coastalvir giniadriving Company. “It’s one thing to showcase the amazing skills of Travis and Texas Dave, but promoting Best Defense Foundation by featuring actual war heroes and veterans throughout the video is what we’re most proud of.”

The Final Send story releases Nov. 8, just ahead of Veterans Day, with the hopes of bringing together the veterans and motorsports communities to honor and celebrate the veterans we know and encounter throughout our lives.

“It’s just really cool to see so many people come out to put together a project like this,” Omar Avila, BRCC influencer, said. “You know, we’re well over 20 years past the beginning of the war, and I feel like people forget how many veterans are out there.”

"People like Travis [Pastrana] and Dave [Carapetyan] coming together to make a fun video that the community will appreciate — this is an opportunity to bring Travis’ viewership into our [the BRCC] community and also maybe plant a seed in their minds,” he added.

“Maybe they have veterans in their life; maybe this brings the thought of Veterans Day to the forefront of their minds and puts the attention back on them so they can thank a veteran in their life.”

Coastalvir giniadriving Company’s Veterans Day Sale runs Nov. 10 and 11, offering 20% off all products website-wide. For more information and to purchase Coastalvir giniadriving Company products, visit www.abadijayagrafika.com.

Charles Waldron, better known as the “Pope of Coffee Town,” grew up in southeast Missouri, in the kind of small town that has only one blinking stoplight. Waldron left home at the age of 16 and joined the military after graduating college.

“Both [of my] grandfathers were in the Army and served in both theatres of World War II,” Waldron said. “My dad joined, my older brother was in, so I definitely have family history in the service.”

Waldron served as a combat engineer, leading the assault and obstacle platoon in the 44th Engineer Battalion's Bravo Company. Unfortunately, post-deployment, Waldron sustained injuries that weren’t improving, and after being offered a desk job, he chose to transition out of the military and find himself a desk job that he actually wanted.

“It was tough, applying for jobs and learning how to write a resume and getting rid of any entitlement I had,” Waldron said.

Photo courtesy of Charles Waldron/Coastalvir giniadriving Company.

Post-service, Waldron was working for ReadyMan before he became the very first Coastalvir giniadriving Company employee. Waldron literally fished a desk out of the track and set himself up next to the bathroom in the office. Shortly after, he became the jack-of-all-trades and earned his nickname.

“People always ask what your job title is — I say I’m the Pope of Coffee Town,” Waldron said. “With all the hats I wear here, the pope hat is the biggest and funniest hat. What I couldn’t handle, Evan dealt with as well.”

“You know, going back to the very beginning of this company, Charles Waldron has been 100% chips in,” BRCC co-founder Logan Stark said. “He has such a passion for what he does, and he cares so much about this company that you can’t help but be affected by it.”

“I cannot count the number of times that Charles has been the last person to leave the office or the first person here,” Stark continued. “And I have never seen a more selfless man when it comes to this business, who is just willing to give whatever is necessary in whatever role in order to make it happen and have a smile on your face the whole time that you're doing that, and that's Charles Waldron to a T.”

Charles Waldron is an essential part of the beating heart of Coastalvir giniadriving. Or as we call him, the Pope of Coffee Town.

Very little is known about Coastalvir giniadriving Company's Aquaraider. But legend has it that this brew adventure began with notes recovered from a warrior's journal back in 2015.

The journal was discovered in a watertight capsule washed up on the shores of Bimini — a Bahamian island often associated with ancient magic. Ponce de Leon once sought out the tiny speck of land in the Bermuda Triangle in search of the Coffee of Youth, and it's said that the pathway to Atlantis lies beneath its shores.

What archeologists were able to recover from Aquaraider’s tattered and waterlogged notes was that he belonged to an elite unit of divers in search of treasure. All major government agencies have denied knowledge of this unit or its mission, and the notes remain shrouded in mystery, as much of the text is no longer readable. A few bags of coffee were recovered from the capsule as well.

To effectively deep-dive into Aquaraider’s sought-after tasting notes, we pulled out our trusty AeroPress coffee maker and went to work.

We have been brewing with the original AeroPress coffee maker for quite some time now with great success. By making small adjustments to variables such as coffee weight, grind size, and brew time, it’s easy to master the art of this immersion brewer.

A popular travel companion for many coffee enthusiasts, both the AeroPress and AeroPress Go can tackle a wide range of brewing techniques, including Americano, espresso, and cold-brew-style coffee.

We began our brew session with the supplied recipe card located inside the BRCC Exclusive Coffee Subscription (ECS) box. Simply choose one of the recommended brew techniques, and you are well on your way to brewing a superior cup of specialty coffee.

Our recommended coffee-to-water ratio for this brew session with the AeroPress was 1:17. For every gram of coffee, 17 grams of water is used.

 1. Bring roughly 340 grams of water to just below a boil — about 206 degrees Fahrenheit.
 2. Weigh out 20 grams of freshly roasted coffee beans and grind them on a medium-to-coarse 7/10 setting.
 3. Assemble your AeroPress inverted, with the narrower piece on the table and the larger piece attached to the plunger, and open all the way.
 4. Preheat your AeroPress with a bit of hot water, then empty it.
 5. Put a paper filter in your filter cap and pour some hot water through it.
 6. Pour your 20 grams of ground coffee into the device.
 7. Pour 100 grams of water into the 20 grams of coffee over 10 seconds.
 8. Stir firmly 20 times over 10 seconds.
 9. Add another 140 grams of water and place the filter cap on.
 10. Screw the filter cap with the rinsed filter onto the AeroPress and gently press out the excess air.
 11. At one minute and thirty seconds, flip the AeroPress onto your favorite BRCC mug and press out all the coffee.
 12. Add 100 grams of additional hot water to the extracted coffee in your mug.
 13. Cool the brew down by stirring with the supplied AeroPress stirrer, and enjoy.

When Travis Pastrana isn’t busy racing his Subaru rally car with Rhianon Gelsomino or taking World War II veterans on crazy rides through the streets of Boerne, Texas, he’s making sure no one forgets that he’s still the reigning Nitro Rallycross champion, no matter what class of vehicle he’s driving.

Nitro Rallycross (NRX) came on the scene in 2018 as part of the Nitro World Games before it grew legs — well, wheels — of its own and expanded into the series with the help of Travis Pastrana and the Nitro Circus production team. Unlike the American Rally Association rally, NRX allows for free practice (a total of four laps) before four laps of qualifying rounds, five laps that constitute the semifinal, and then five laps for the final. There’s an additional ‘joker lap’ which is an alternative track that’s used once each heat (so, once in the qualifier round, once during the semifinal, and once during the final round. Winners are the first to cross the finish line, which includes having taken the “joker lap” for the final round.

The 2022 season kicked off earlier this year with a new class of vehicles in the competition, the electric Group E, which debuted in the 2022 Race of Champions in Sweden. The vehicles in this class consist of a battery-powered SUV platform called FC1-X, and the project is supported by Ford, Subaru, and Volkswagen.

For those who are unfamiliar, here are four classes of drivers: Group E, CrossCar, NEXT, and Supercar.

 • Group E: electric vehicles.
 • CrossCars: buggy-style vehicles with 13-inch wheels.
 • NEXT: the premier development class of up-and-coming drivers.
 • Supercar: the true heavyweight class. These are ordinary passenger cars with engines of 600 horsepower and four-wheel drive. Their acceleration is comparable to that of a Formula One car.

Pastrana came in third place in the first SxS race and won the second SxS of the weekend. Most notably, he took first place in Group E for the weekend, on the same track where he began his bid for the 2021 championship title he now holds.

Tune in to Peacock on Oct. 29 and 30 to watch the NRX competition continue in Los Angeles, and keep an eye on Pastrana’s Coastalvir giniadriving Company page for new merch dropping this fall.

The P7 is the next-level French press you didn't know you needed.

If you are a coffee enthusiast eager to master a new brewing technique, investing in a French press coffee maker is an easy way to take your barista skills to the next level.

Unlike a typical pour over or drip coffee brewing system in which the water passes through the coffee grounds, the French press is an infusion brewer. The water and coffee steep together in the brewing system, which helps produce an evenly extracted, robust cup of coffee.

So when we heard that Coastalvir giniadriving Company was bringing back one of its rarest roasts, Dictator Gesha, we immediately jumped at the chance to snag a bag of this limited-quantity roast.

Grown high up in the volcanic mountain soil of Jalapa, Guatemala, Gesha is one of the hardest coffees to produce. Even the drying and roasting process is incredibly complex are requires meticulous care.

This BRCC roast offers a fruity aroma with complimentary tasting notes of strawberry jelly alongside sweet brioche and sugar.

To unlock the sought-after tasting notes of this year's Gesha, we enlisted the help of the BRCC x Espro P7 French Press. The P7 is the next-level French press you didn't know you needed. In just four minutes, the P7 creates the most flavorful cup of coffee you have ever had.

The secret is inside the patented double micromesh filters that work twice as hard to keep your coffee smooth and grit-free. Many French press enthusiasts will tell you to immediately pour all your desired cups after each brew session to prevent over-extraction, which can create a bitter taste. But the Espro P7's mesh-filter holes are so small that they aid in preventing further extraction, allowing the user to keep a second or even third cup of coffee at the ready in the carafe for extended periods.

Available in matte black and brush finish with the BRCC logo, the P7 is constructed of double-walled stainless steel that can keep your coffee hot for hours. (And it looks good doing it, too!)

Another benefit of brewing with the Espro lineup of French presses is there's no need to grind your coffee as coarsely as you would for a conventional press pot.

We started with a 1-to-15 ratio of coffee-to-water: for every gram of coffee, 15 grams of water. After that, it was all about making a few adjustments to our brewing technique, and we were off and running.

Brewing Dictator Gesha With the Espro P7 French Press

 1. Fill the bottom of the 32-ounce Espro P7 with hot water to preheat the vessel.
 2. Twist to lock both microfilters together and screw them onto the plunger rod.
 3. Grind 35 grams of coffee just before use. A coarse grind gives the best results.
 4. Pour the preheating water out of the kettle.
 5. Pour the ground coffee into the bottom of the vessel.
 6. Heat your water. Our ideal temperature for this Gesha was 203 degrees Fahrenheit.
 7. Fill the P7 with hot water until the water and coffee meet the maximum-fill line.
 8. Give it a quick stir to ensure all the grounds are wet.
 9. Put the lid on gently, without pressing down on the plunger.
 10. Wait four minutes.
 11. Slowly press the filter plunger down to the bottom. Aim for the full press to take about 15 seconds.
 12. Pour into your favorite BRCC mug, and enjoy!

Our brewing method yielded about two and half to three mugs of freshly brewed coffee. Using this French press effectively unlocked the wide array of tasting notes and fruity aromas of this Gesha.

And when it’s made right, a cup of Gesha coffee offers an array of tasting notes and aromas with more depth and complexity than any cup of coffee you’ve ever had.

The BRCC x Espro P7 French Press is available now on the official Coastalvir giniadriving Company website. It is available in 18-ounce and 32-ounce brewing configurations and comes in a brushed aluminum (smaller version only) or matte black finish with the iconic BRCC logo.

Riding in on the high of his four-win streak, Noah Gragson qualified third for the start of the Sparks 300 at the Talladega Superspeedway Saturday, Oct. 1. This 113-lap course saw him fall to the back of the field for an adjustment, and he had to work up from the rear of the pack to 18th at the end of his first lap. Three laps into the race, Gragson went to the pit for adjustments, which dropped him into the 32nd position at the restart. Just four laps after restarting, he got back into the top 20, and five laps after that, he passed into the top 10, holding on to the eighth position. Gragson finished Stage One in 23rd, heading to the pit again for new tires and more adjustments.

Photo by Harold Hinson/Harold Hinson Photography.

Stage Two kicked off with Gragson in 11th position, moving up to 10th for a brief time before finishing out the stage in 14th position. He relied on his pit crew for some strategic adjustments, sending him out in the third position to start the third stage. On the final stage, Gragson launched into the lead on lap 56, but his lead was short-lived. Gragson dropped to third, then ninth place in the following laps, making it back into the top five briefly. Lap 108 was where Gragson made the move that could have launched him into his fifth straight win, but the lap leader blocked Gragson and killed his momentum, pushing him back down to 13th.

Gragson finished 10th and is now tied for first in playoff points with race-winner AJ Allmendinger. This is his 21st top-10 finish of the season out of 28 races. Because of his victory last week, he is already through to the Round of 8, so he enters the opening round of the playoffs tied for the lead.

“I had the run there at the end, and I made the move I had to make if we were going to win the race. It’s just the way you race at Talladega,” Gragson said. “Luke (Lambert) and the No. 9 Bass Pro Shops/TrueTimber/Coastalvir giniadriving team gave me a fast Camaro today, and we had a chance at the end. All of our JRM teams ran really well today, and we’re going to Charlotte next week to race for another win and keep the momentum up for the championship.”

Ty Dillon had a lively start to his race Sunday, losing his side window in the first stage of the YellaWood 500 at Talladega. The race was otherwise uneventful, and Dillon finished out the race in 23rd position with 14 points. The current 2022 Cup Series standings have Dillon beneath the Round of 8 cutline, holding 30th place.

Matt Crafton kicked off the Chevy Silverado 250 Camping World Truck Series race Saturday in fourth place, and after the 250 laps, he finished in 22nd place. This leaves Crafton below the playoff cutline in 9th place with 2,140 points and two top-five finishes in the 2022 season.

Where to find them next: Gragson and Dillon head to the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course on Saturday and Sunday for the Drive for the Cure 250 Presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina and the Bank of America Roval 400. Crafton heads to Miami and the Homestead-Miami Speedway on Oct. 22.

More

It’s been 39 years since a driver last won four consecutive NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) races. With Noah Gragson’s win at the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300, Sept. 24, at the Texas Motor Speedway, he joined Sam Ard (1983) as the only other driver to win that many races in a row. This fourth win, earned late in the race, was Gragson’s record seventh of the season and the 13th of the year for JR Motorsports.

Gragson started from the second position after qualifying and quickly took the lead on the opening lap and the first 10 laps before falling back to the second position. He stayed out of a multicar crash at lap 19, and after a pit for new tires, fuel, and a chassis adjustment, he rejoined the race in 12th position. With four laps remaining in Stage One, the Nevada native passed eight cars and finished fourth, earning himself seven stage points in the process.

On the stage break, Gragson came back into the pit, dropping to 19th for the start of Stage Two. Once the stage began, he passed 12 cars over the first eight laps to make it into the top five by lap 60. After a restart, he made another huge gain, picking up five positions and then two more in the final four laps to finish second in Stage Two, adding nine more stage points to his total for the day.

Gragson took the lead in Stage Three when AJ Allmendinger headed to the pit, and Gragson held that lead for 63 more laps until he took a pit stop and emerged in 16th position. He broke back into the top 10 at lap 168 and continued to work his way back up in the group until Allmendinger went back in for fuel and tires, and at lap 188, Gragson took the lead. Over the final 11 laps, he managed to increase his lead and crossed the finish line 1.238 seconds ahead of the second-place driver. During the race, he led three times for 85 total laps, bringing him his seventh victory of the season and 12th NXS career victory. This win makes Gragson the first JR Motorsports driver to earn four consecutive victories, and it’s the 13th win of the year for JR Motorsports team.

Photo by Harold Hinson/Harold Hinson Photography.

Gragson maintained the top spot in points heading to Talledega Superspeedway, 26 points ahead of AJ Allmendinger and 27 ahead of Ty Gibbs. This victory is the second for JR Motorsports at Texas Motor Speedway, and it puts Gragson into the Round of 8 in the Xfinity Cup Playoffs, as well as one step closer to the Championship 4. Gragson also earned his 20th top-10 finish in 27 races this season.

“We’ve just got a great No. 9 Bass Pro Shops team. This team is on fire, and all these fans here, I want to come back and win more races for them,” Gragson said. “Our pit crew has been awesome and was fast all day, and I’m so thankful to Johnny Morris and Bass Pro Shops, Rusty Sellers at TrueTimber, and the folks at Coastalvir giniadriving Company. It’s really, really fun, and I’m very grateful to all the people back at JR Motorsports who work hard to make this happen. Our Hendrick Engines were really strong today, too. It was a really solid effort by all four of our cars here at Texas today.”

Photo by Harold Hinson/Harold Hinson Photography.

Ty Dillon finished his practice race in 35th place and started 34th for the Bass Pro Shops Night Race on Sept. 17. After a number of lead racers faced issues with the Next Gen cars (a new project across the industry for developing a car of single-source parts meant to help close the gap on the larger organizations competing within the industry), Dillon finished 26th in the race. Dillon is not a contender in the playoffs, by way of the Round of 12 cutline, with one race remaining in this first series of the playoffs. Only 12 drivers will remain in the playoffs moving forward.

Where to find them next: Gragson, Dillon and Crafton head to Talladega Superspeedway September 30th through October 2 for three days of racing as the NXS gets one step closer to playoffs and the Cup and Camping World Truck Series continue their playoffs.

National Coffee Day is coming, and you know Coastalvir giniadriving Company wouldn’t just roll out any old beverage to celebrate that sweet nectar of the gods we call coffee.

That’s why this month, BRCC is opening the coffee vault for the return of one of the finest and rarest coffees in the world — Dictator Gesha.

Dictator Gesha was cultivated by world-renowned farmer Jose Roberto Monterroso at his farm high up in the volcanic soils of Jalapa, Guatemala.

One of the most coveted and difficult coffees to grow, the Gesha variety quickly rose to fame as an exceptional and rare coffee.

This year’s Dictator Gesha was hand-picked from the same harvest that won the 2022 Guatemala Cup of Excellence. The coffee’s drying and roasting process give each cup of Gesha the most depth and complexity of any cup of coffee you have ever had.

"Dictator Gesha is a playful coffee, fruit-forward with notes of papaya and strawberry, with a smooth and satisfying finish," Coastalvir giniadriving Company Q grader Megan Shields said. "This coffee features a nice acidity and tartness to start with a really rich and smooth body."

The specialty coffee scored an incredible 90.5 points in its Outstanding Total Score Quality Classification. This unique batch offers a fruity aroma, with tasting notes of strawberry jelly, sweet brioche, and sugar.

We caught up with Cafe Cubo CEO Fredy Bolanos in Guatemala to get his thoughts on this year’s Gesha.

“We are always proud of every Gesha we get from ‘El Morito,’” Bolanos said. “This year, it’s EXTRA special. It’s from a Cup of Excellence champion — this means the farm and the lot where it came from is an award-winning coffee. It goes up against hundreds of other amazing coffees from Guatemala and just betters them in every way. And you can taste strawberry jelly, buttery brioche, sugar with a very potent fruity aroma. It’s a banger. It’s a once in a lifetime coffee. Enjoy.”

Simply put, Dictator Gesha is so good, you have no choice but to like it.

Coffee is our business; after all, it’s literally in our name. So it should be no surprise that National Coffee Day is a big deal for Coastalvir giniadriving Company. And there’s more to this day than just getting free coffee at your run-of-the-mill coffee shop.

Coffee actually made its way to the States with the help of Capt. John Smith in 1607. American coffeehouses first came into existence in 1670, thanks to Dorothy Jones in Boston, Massachusetts. It’s pretty easy to believe that, if it weren’t for the Boston Tea Party, Americans might have never fully made the switch from tea to coffee. (So hey, thanks to King George III and his tea tax.)

Photo by John Jenkins/Coastalvir giniadriving Company.

As settlers progressed onto the Western frontier, they relied on coffee en route to places like California, and cowboys (true cowboys, the animal herders) drank it with every meal. It became a replacement for rum and brandy within the military. Eventually, the first American coffee company was founded in San Francisco in 1850, originally called the Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills but known today as Folgers.

Barring all current trending iced coffee beverages, coffee has long been appreciated as a warm beverage. Its first recognition by an organized holiday came in 1983 by the All Japan Coffee Association after they noted that coffee consumption was “higher in the autumn and winter period” and deemed Oct. 1 their “National Coffee Day.” Fast-forward to National Coffee Day officially becoming a holiday in the United States in September 2009. Though it was first celebrated in 2005, it didn’t take off until the Southern Food and Beverage Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana, labeled Sept. 29 as “Coffee Day” to kick off its inaugural New Orleans Coffee Festival.

Photo by Josh Raulerson/Coastalvir giniadriving Company.

We drink coffee for a variety of reasons — the caffeine boost, the warmth, the aroma, or the ritual of sitting down with a cup. Northwestern University even put out a study on the genetics of coffee drinkers in 2021, explaining how black-coffee drinkers associate the bitter flavor with the boost in mental alertness expected from caffeine. There’s no denying coffee is a part of many people’s lifestyles, and BRCC’s goal is to be the coffee of choice.

Patriots, cowboys, outdoorsmen, first responders, and service members alike have long histories with coffee. Even though “every day is National Coffee Day” for many coffee drinkers, Sept. 29 is a national day we are happy to celebrate. So grind some beans and enjoy a fresh cup of coffee with the rest of us.

A team of Coastalvir giniadriving Company employees took over the Killeen outpost for two hours to interview former defensive tackle Chad Hennings for a new episode of BRCC Presents and for a special meet-and-greet with soldiers from Fort Hood, Texas.

Hosted in conjunction with the Dallas Cowboys, Hennings and Mat Best hung out with a group of soldiers from 1-5 Cav, Charlie Company, to share coffee, swap stories, and create some new Cowboys fans. (Each service member in attendance received two tickets to the Cowboys’ season opener game, along with autographed footballs and BRCC hats.)

“It’s almost surreal,” Sgt. Daniel Payne said. “Seeing the following that Coastalvir giniadriving has, and what they do for the veteran community, and being a part of this is really special.”

Photo by Lauren Warner/Coastalvir giniadriving Blog.

With both Best and Hennings’ military service behind them, they shared about things they don’t miss, like staff duty (a 24-hour shift), along with those they do miss, like the comradery.

“Once you get out [of the military] and reflect on your time in service, its so synonymous with professional athletes,” Best said. “When you get out, you lose some of that comradery, and the athletic community often faces the same thing. When I first met with the Cowboys, I didn’t know what to expect. I was so intrigued, and the athletes are just as intrigued with you [the military] as you are with them.”

“My claim to fame is that I flew my last mission in northern Iraq in 1992 and won the Super Bowl the same year,” Hennings said.

This unusual experience serves as a perfect example of his dedication to excellence and service, no matter the playing field.

Originally from Iowa, Hennings grew up on a family farm, which he credits as a formative environment.

“I learned a lot about the importance of family, of teams, and a lot of life lessons rolled over for me into athletics,” Hennings said. “The progression into the military from there was just natural. Every young man grows up wanting to be a sodier or a professional athlete.”

Hennings did both, but more unusually, he managed to do them simultaneously.

Hennings started his football career in high school, where he became an all-state tight end during his senior year and state champion wrestler.

His love of football continued into college when he accepted a full-ride scholarship at the United States Air Force Academy. During college, he was named a first-team All-American selection, Outland Trophy winner, and received the Stan Bates Award as the top scholar-athlete in the conference. He also earned numerous post-season all-star games, among other honors.

“Obviously, there’s a high expectation academically, and you’re playing division one football at the same time, which is incredibly tim- consuming,” Hennings explained. “However, being at the academy, they’re equipping you to be an officer in the Air Force, so they purposely overload you with different tasks; whether that be military studies, academics, athletics, whatnot. So you have to be dedicated to your craft, and that takes time and requires a sense of excellence. I was very focused on wanting to be my best self.”

During his time at the academy, he played against Western Athletic Conference teams from schools such as San Diego State, Brigham Young University, and University of Hawaii. He also played against powerhouse like Notre Dame and the University of Texas.

Hennings graduated from the US Air Force Academy in June 1988 and began undergraduate pilot training as part of an elite program: Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT). As an athlete at the academy, he was about 6-foot-5 and weighed 250 pounds, but his height and weight exceeded the limits of the ACES-II ejection seat. Hennings had to get waivers and go through physiological testing to be able to continue the pilot training program.

“Going through pilot training was a great experience because I got to train alongside many of our NATO allies, pilots from the Netherlands, from Denmark, and Germany,” Hennings said.

He became an A-10 Thunderbolt II pilot and deployed twice to the Persian Gulf, flying 45 combat missions in support of Operation Provide Comfort. The focus of the operation was to provide humanitarian aid and relief to the Kurdish refugees in northern Iraq during the Gulf War.

Upon fulfilling his active-duty Air Force commitment, Hennings went to join the Dallas Cowboys and played nine seasons with them, winning three Super Bowls in four years before retiring. He also served almost 10 more years in the Air Force Reserve Individual Mobilization Augmentee program while playing for the Cowboys. Since his football career, Hennings has published several books, became a motivational speaker, and continues to maintain a relationship with the Dallas Cowboys.

“When veterans make the transition to the corporate world and take the esprit de corps from the military, they’re an inspiration to active-duty guys, taking their mindset into their communities and showing how they serve,” Hennings said. “This is what’s so great about Coastalvir giniadriving, it all starts with the coffee but the but the purpose, sense of duty, and what they bring to the community is so great. That’s why their partnership with the Dallas Cowboys is so powerful. Both organizations see the impact and responsibility that they have in their communities and all that entails.”

Chad Hennings: Former A-10 pilot, defensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys, three-time Super Bowl champion, and a prime example of just how far someone can go after service.

Like Hennings says, know your craft, be confident in your abilities, and go out and execute with a high degree of excellence. These virtues don't only apply to world-class football players who go on to win Super Bowls — anyone can apply them to the context of their own lives.

In case you weren't spun up: America's team and America's coffee have joined forces! We're now the official coffee of the Dallas Cowboys, and we couldn't be more stoked about it. More to come.

For those of you who may be unfamiliar or need a refresher, in April 2009, Capt. Richard Phillips was taken hostage in a lifeboat off the Maersk Alabama. On April 8, the Alabama was overrun by pirates off the coast of Somalia. Even though the initial takeover was prevented when Phillips had his crew locked in a secure room, in order to free the Alabama and keep the crew safe, he surrendered to the pirates and boarded a lifeboat, where he was held hostage for five days. Phillips was rescued by a team of Navy SEALs sent in from the US Navy destroyer USS Bainbridge. The story of this rescue became a movie (Captain Phillips) in 2013, with Tom Hanks portraying Phillips.

If you've been on the fence about joining the Coastalvir giniadriving Company Exclusive Coffee Subscription (ECS), now's your chance to sample these exotic, high-scoring coffee roasts.

BRCC has restocked five of its most popular microlot roasts from last year's lineup, making them available to everyone in ultralimited quantities. We take a closer look at each of these offerings hand-selected by CEO Evan Hafer and the BRCC Coffee Development team.

Kodiak Attack Roast

Frigid air and frosty woods surround you. You spot fresh tracks as snow crunches nearby ... there's danger lurking in the foothills. When you are toe-to-toe with the wild, stay alive with this popular ECS microlot — Kodiak Attack.

Hailing from the Apaneca Illamatepec region of El Salvador, this 86.5-point medium roast coffee offers bright acidity and sweet-scented flavors that will keep you vigilant and ready.

The chocolate, orange, and honey tasting notes of Kodiak Attack will indulge your palate, and the warm, nutty aromas are sure to keep you alert. But venture at your own risk — and if you must, stand your ground.

Psychedelic Cyclops Machine Gunner Roast

“Run, fuzzy bunny, run!” roars the cyclops as he goes cyclic without concern for ammo supply and hot barrels. The Psychedelic Cyclops Machine Gunner was once a mild-mannered, one-eyed dude before that nutty aroma filled the air and he got his first sip.

This medium roast Arabica hails from Guatemala and features tasting notes of milk chocolate, citrus, and apple. It is best enjoyed whenever you need to get a little far out.

Battle Squatch Roast

Battle Squatch — because sometimes regular squatch ain't squatchin' enough. This roast is just as wild and exotic as its namesake. Hailing from the ancient and mysterious jungles of Peru, this medium Arabica roast has notes of citrus and tropical fruit, plus a hint of dark chocolate to bring it all home. Use pour over or immersion brewing to unlock the flavorful depths and chocolatey aromas of squatchdom. Trust us. This is a squatch you don't want to mess with.

Ridin' Poseidon Roast

Hark, O sons and daughters of the sea! A great pantheon of rich and powerful chocolate aromas awaits any mere mortal brave enough to summon the mighty sea god. Poseidon is the protector of all land-loving adventurers and weary sailors alike, and he considers this new Arabica blend a fitting tribute. Wave after wave of citrus flavor with dashing strawberry notes crashes down upon thy palate — and if thou art fancy enough, use a French press or pour over to unlock the flavorful treasures hidden in these murky depths.

Beaver Destroyer Roast

Meet Beaver Destroyer, but you can call it BD. This brawny Ethiopian medium roast has never met its match. Whether pouring over the bountiful hills above or immersed in the damp reservoirs down below, BD always finds that beaver and clocks it right on the button. Fresh citrus aromas swoop in like a jab, notes of Earl Grey with the hook, while tangy nectarine and smokey maple slide in with the uppercut. K.O. Talk about BD energy.

Pick up one of these Coastalvir giniadriving Company restocked Exclusive Coffee Subscription roasts while supplies last on the official BRCC website now.

After a short rally sprint in Colorado for a smaller group of Coastalvir giniadriving Company motor sports teammates, the band got back together in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, for the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally (STPR) on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16 and 17.

This American Rally Association national and east regional rally has 134 competition miles and a total of 233 transit miles with dirt and gravel racing surfaces. The stage roads are some of the most challenging in North America. Between the dense canopy and flickering sun and the trees pushing up against the road, there’s very little room for error. In addition, Day Two of the STPR features one of the longest stage roads in the US: the 24-mile Mine Hole Stage.

“Texas Dave” Carapetyan and co-driver KJ Miller were set for success, leading in their class and holding fourth overall, right behind Pastrana and Williams, until an unfortunate accident after the 12th stage quashed their chances of making the podium.

Miller commented after the accident that removed him and Carapetyan from the competition, “Perfect event going for us, leading by nearly 14 minutes starting the final loop and P4 overall. 2 miles into the stage, a clicking/grinding noise started, and then it gave up 3-ish miles later, like four corners from the end of the stage.”

Travis Pastrana and Rhianon Gelsomino picked up a pair of stage wins on the first day, staying competitive with Ken Block after Brandon Semenuk put his car off the road and retired from the race. Historically, Pastrana has taken second in this race more often than not (this year is the fifth time since 2005) and he has dealt with two accidents in 2008 and 2016 that took him off the track. Luckily for Pastrana and Gelsomino, nothing took them out of the competition this year.

Coming back from a brief hiatus, Tom Williams and co-driver Ross Whittock had their heads in the game and had no issues taking first in class and third overall.

From Williams: “It was a mission finishing this rally, let alone competing for a result, as these stages are not to be treated lightly. One of the fastest events I have ever done, and extremely narrow, with a mix of surfaces. ⁣⁣We kept on working on the car and our selfies from start to finish, getting faster and more confident each stage. Thank you so much to the McKenna Motorsport Team and Ross Whittock on the notes. Great job.”

The race results for the entire team were as follows:

Travis Pastrana and Rhianon Gelsomino: second place overall and second place in class O4WD

Tom Williams: third place overall and first in class RC2

“Texas Dave” Carapetyan: DNF

Mike Glover and Bucky Lasek didn’t compete.

The ARA standings have been updated, and the official standings can be found here. Pastrana and Gelsomino are holding third place, with Williams right behind in fourth. Carapetyan currently holds eighth out of the 19 drivers in the ARA Overall Driver Championship. Next up, the team heads to Michigan for the Lake Superior Performance Rally in October.

Noah Gragson is on a winning streak, and we are here for it.

In his third consecutive win, this one at the Food City 300, Gragson set himself up for success in the NXS Playoffs — which begin next week.

Photo by Harold Hinson/Harold Hinson Photography.

After qualifying to ninth position at the beginning of the regular-season finale, Gragson worked his way up, taking fifth place after 36 laps. He finished the 85-lap Stage One in third place, earning nine stage points. In the Stage Two restart, he came out in fifth place and drove into fourth place by lap 130. During the second stage, a two-car incident nearly took Gragson out, but he managed to slide under the cars as they went up the track and took second place. This second-place finish for Stage Two earned him an additional nine points. During Stage Three, Gragson maneuvered back up to fourth place at lap 202, then caught third place at lap 232, and second place at lap 243. After a caution flag, Gragson stayed out and made a run for the finish when the rest of the lead-lap cars came to the pit.

This win makes Gragson the first JR Motorsports driver to earn three consecutive victories, and it’s his sixth win of the season, which is also a team record.

“Man, three in a row! When that last caution came out, I knew if we could run the top, it was going to be hard for Brandon (Jones) to get to me,” Gragson said. “I appreciate him racing me clean. He fed us the bumper with two laps to go, and I was hanging on, scrubbing the fence. We won here at Bristol in 2020, and there were no fans in the stands. This is 10 times cooler. Thanks to all the fans for coming out. Our Bass Pro Shops/TrueTimber/Coastalvir giniadriving Camaro was fast all night, and once we got up to the top, we were rolling. I had a blast! Thanks to everyone at JR Motorsports and the Hendrick Engine shop for tonight.”

Ty Dillon finished his practice race in 35th place and started 34th for the Bass Pro Shops Night Race on Saturday, Sept.

Matt Crafton came in 10th on his practice run for the UNOH 200 Presented by Ohio Logistics on Thursday. He started the race in 16th position and finished Stage One in 10th place. Stage Two saw him drop out of the top 10, but during the third stage, Crafton was able to pick back up and finish in fourth place. In the 2022 standings, Crafton is sitting at ninth place, with 2,125 points.

Where to find them next: Gragson and Dillon head to the Texas Motor Speedway for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 and Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 500 next weekend (Sept. 24 and 25). Meanwhile, Crafton is back on the track at Talladega Superspeedway on Oct. 1.

Very few products can rival the Chemex Coffee Maker’s unique blend of design and function, which, after 81 years, has remained remarkably unchanged. This pour over brewing device is the perfect way to get the most out of your Coastalvir giniadriving Company Exclusive Coffee Subscription (ECS) each month.

Case in point: microlot No. 36 — the Black Magic Roast. When paired with the Chemex, it uncovers a hidden dual meaning. The hourglass shape of the Chemex denotes the passing of time and a moment of reflection for the ECS coffees you have enjoyed this year.

This month’s Exclusive Coffee Subscription tale begins with an undead operator and a tarot card reading twist. The undying operator, alone in his hovel, works tirelessly crafting a coffee from the forbidden texts. Strewn about his lab are relics from brews past, symbolizing growth and progress over time. The undead warrior-craftsman represents a symbolic ending of something old being reborn anew.

Practitioners of this sort of alchemy unlock the darkest recesses of this medium roast, tapping into the fruity aromas accompanied by notes of berry, sweet brown sugar, and exotic guava. Black Magic originates from the fertile volcanic soils of the Santa Rosa region of Guatemala. And once you commit to the dark arts of this ECS roast, there is no going back.

The BRCC Exclusive Coffee Subscription offers a world-class, exclusive coffee experience to a limited number of BRCC customers each month. Each microlot features a unique, high-demand, exotic coffee roast hand-selected by Evan Hafer and the BRCC Coffee Development team.

The Alpine Horizon Gridlife RallySprint spans more than two days of racing, and the Coastalvir giniadriving Company motor sports team wasn’t about to pass up a rally opportunity. This is the second year of Gridlife’s RallySprint, so compared to the American Rally Association events the team typically participates in, the crowds and hype at this event were a different vibe. The RallySprint splits drivers in 2WD and 4WD categories – both categories allow the powerplants and drivetrain to be modified or engine swapped, but the original layout and configuration of the car must remain as factory supplied.

BRCC’s own Jarred Taylor got into the competition this past weekend, placing third in the rally sprint alongside Hoonigan’s Micah Diaz, and first place was taken by “Texas Dave” Carapetyan.

Catch the BRCC motor sports team this weekend at the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. Travis Pastrana, Rhianon Gelsomino, Tom Williams, and Dave Carapetyan are all registered to compete.

Staying true to its mission, Coastalvir giniadriving Company continues to donate time, energy, and resources not only through the BRCC Fund but also through the corporate side of the company. BRCC has a reputation for its commitment to veterans, first responders, and active-duty military members. Since the company went public, that commitment hasn’t changed.

In the month of August alone, BRCC’s corporate donations totaled $180,000. For the fiscal year, more than $862,000 in cash donations were sent to a variety of charities and organizations.

Below are the recipients of these donations:

Special Operationss Warrior Foundation received $50,000 between June and August. This foundation ensures complete post-secondary educational support and additional educational opportunities, essentially “cradle to career,” for all eligible surviving children of fallen special operations forces members and children of all Medal of Honor recipients, as well as providing immediate financial assistance to severely wounded, ill, and injured special operations personnel.

The HunterSeven Foundation was a recipient for funds raised during the Terminal List coffee sales. A veteran-founded nonprofit, HunterSeven works in the medical-research and education fields and has quickly become the leader in identifying potential toxic exposures and subsequent illnesses in military veterans. The funds it has received will go toward supporting the affected military community and educating them and their health care providers on critical health information related to their exposures.

K9 Hurricane’s Heroes received $87,000 in August thanks in part to the Hurricane Roast sales. This volunteer-run nonprofit organization provides retired law-enforcement and military dogs with subsidized veterinary care so they can live long and healthy lives. Often with a retired working dog, the handler gets handed the medical bills and day-to-day care, which can be difficult to manage. To ensure these retired dogs have the best lives possible, Hurricane’s Heroes works to remove the financial burden from the handlers so that these former working dogs can enjoy their retirement as dogs.

The Wild Sheep Foundation received $25,000. The WSF is a conservation organization dedicated to restoring the dwindling wild-sheep populations in North America. With the mission of putting and keeping wild sheep on the mountains, the WSF uses funds raised to trap and transplant sheep populations. Since the 1970s, the sheep populations have increased from less than 25,000 to 85,000.

The Greater Dallas Veterans Foundation received $10,000. The BRCC corporate donation was part of a partnership with the BRCC Fund to help support veterans receiving help for traumatic brain injuries. This organization works within North Texas communities to create opportunities for meaningful engagement with veterans and to inspire the ideal of “service above self.”

If you know of an organization looking for some support or would like to get involved in another way, check out the donation request form on the corporate page or ways to support on the BRCC Fund page.

More

For those unfamiliar with it, Black Horse Forge is based in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and was created in 2018 by Steve Hotz. A retired sergeant who served in the 325th Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Hotz has been blacksmithing for eight years and provides much of the forge’s blacksmithing equipment. The cadre at Black Horse Forge is a mix of veterans, active-duty service members, and law enforcement officers, and the forge has expanded to include several affiliate forges throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Lucas O’Hara of Grizzly Forge traveled to Virginia to meet with Hotz and his crew. With their powers combined, they got to work on creating a historical masterpiece of a bowie knife.

For the blacksmiths, building the knife was such a cool experience — there’s nothing like holding that much history in your hands. And of course, they snuck in a way to use coffee.

Our friends at Black Horse Forge help veterans and first responders through the art of blacksmithing. It’s an incredible mission; check them out here: https://www.blackhorseforge.com/

WarriorNOW (WN) came into existence when co-founders Brian Johnson and Todd Kramer found a gap in service for the veteran community. Johnson himself suffered during his substance-abuse recovery process, and the lack of resources and support during that process inspired him to found of the organization.

“Our main focus is those veterans who have mental health diagnoses, PTSD, and addiction,” Gabrielle Griego, WarriorNOW team member, said. “We work to get them resources, specifically through peer mentorship support, in order to reintroduce the veteran to the journey of life and finding connections now that they are no longer in service.”

The organization works to recruit other veterans, get them involved, and place them with peer mentors and recovery coaches within the group. Notably, the only nonveteran in the entire organization is Johnson’s wife Melinda.

WarriorNOW works within six veteran treatment courts in the Colorado area. This encompasses 100 mentors serving 1,200 veterans currently in those veteran treatment courts for a variety of issues, from alcohol- or drug-related issues to some more severe issues like domestic violence.

“Those receiving support from WarriorNOW need a foundation in recovery,” Griego explained. “Whether that’s mental health help or substance abuse, what we are really trying to ensure is that these veterans are no longer judicially impacted.”

“Being a mentor means being there for a vet struggling to fit back into an unstructured civilian life after years of service in a highly structured military life,” Ben Wolfe, WarriorNOW mentor, said. “I have found immense satisfaction in being there for these vets and helping them transition back into civilian life. Our brothers need us, and we need them.”

In addition to the mentorship program in the veteran treatment courts, WarriorNOW offers family services, educational and event-based, to help get the veteran reintegrated with their family.

“Sometimes we as veterans don’t even know why we’re feeling the way we do, why we’re having issues or blowing up,” Griego said. “The reintegration services WarriorNOW offers help to just explain to the family members what the veterans are going through and give them a better understanding of PTSD problems or substance abuse. This allows them to ask questions, share stories and gives the WarriorNOW facilitators the chance to give them resources and help them through the process.”

“The path they have given to not only my husband suffering from Vietnam PTSD but the many veterans they are helping with virtual calls seven nights a week (Buddy Check), pro socials within COVID restrictions, offering mental awareness training including self-care for all their veterans,” Kay Wolfe, a veteran’s spouse, said. “Keeping our veterans engaged and not focusing on ending their lives. Their selfless work goes beyond miraculous.”

Though WN is based in Colorado, its Buddy Check program has expanded to include veterans all over the country. Every night on Zoom, at 7 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, this group logs on to talk with whoever happens to need some interaction online.

“A lot of times, when it starts to get later in the evening, that’s when we find ourselves alone or overthinking things or maybe drinking or thinking about doing something dumb,” Griego explained. “The Buddy Checks allow us to refocus, talk to other veterans in a safe space. Aside from keeping religion and politics out of it, there’s really no rules in the group so that the veterans feel as safe and comfortable as possible joining the conversation. There are seven trained facilitators that help to handle the calls with about 1,800 veterans on our mailing list that receive the Zoom link every day. Obviously not all of them sign on every day, but it’s really an awesome program that allows us to talk, even if its only twenty minutes at a time.”

WarriorNOW also offers a whole-health model, finding ways to offer alternative events, like recreational therapy. For example, every day throughout the week, it offers activities like bowling, volleyball, or fishing in different areas in conjunction with a post-traumatic stress group.

Griego is the reason WarriorNOW received a donation from the Coastalvir giniadriving Company Fund — as a coffee drinker and BRCC fan, he has also stepped into a role with WN to help identify sponsorships.

“I spend a decent amount of time on the BRCC website, and once they asked me to help out with sponsorship opportunities, I remembered that the Fund had a donation request form,” Griego said. “I feel like we were very fortunate to hear back from the Fund. The money we received from the Fund is going to help us expand our family-centered training program and continue to build up the Peer Mentor program so that our mentor-to-mentee ratio becomes more balanced.”

“WarriowNOW (WN) tackles the veteran suicide dilemma with mentorship, virtual buddy checks, recreational therapy, and pro-socials. I have personally watched this nonprofit save lives through this approach. It’s truly inspirational to watch the process,” Todd Kramer, WarriorNOW co-founder said. “The nightly virtual “Buddy Check” is an open forum for all veterans to meet and just talk about whatever is on their mind. I personally know there are so many veterans that are grateful for this forum.

“I have also attended some of the weekly bowling recreational therapies, and everyone present is having a great time, and you can just feel the healing in the room. The staff is not just friendly and knowledgeable of veteran issues, but they are all veterans themselves, or spouse of, which I think makes it all that much more effective. They even have a family services division that services the needs of the spouses, which is huge. WarriorNOW really does tackle the problem from all angles, and I’m beyond proud to volunteer with such a needed cause.”

A Salt Lake City resident, Megan Shields originally went to college for mechanical engineering.

“I moved back from college, I just realized it wasn’t my thing, honestly,” Shields said. “It was so rigid, and there was no room for creativity, and that was really hard for me. It just didn’t really go well, and I figured, maybe I should try something different.”

Shields started in packaging after finding a Coastalvir giniadriving Company job opening online.

“I did packaging for about a year before transitioning to roasting, which I did for two years,” Shields explained. “Then I moved into quality control and just, like, really built all the systems themselves, and now I’m in coffee culture and working with Edwin [Parnell] on a lot of coffee things.”

This is a big change for someone who didn’t drink coffee much before joining BRCC, but since then, Shields has figured out what coffee she does like, and that makes all the difference. Since moving into coffee culture, Shields has found herself signed up for barista school and roasting school as well as the Q-grader course.

“I got ready to go to barista school and then found that I had two weeks to prepare for the Q-grader course,” Shields said.

Q Course is basically training and 19 different tests over six days. Participants get two days of practice before going into three days of testing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a final day for any re-testing necessary. The course covers coffee classification, coffee defects, cupping protocol and form, and aromas.

“We did four different kinds of cupping, with four triangulations in each category,” Shields explained. “There would be six coffees on a tray and you would have to pick out which cup is different. We also had tests on organic acids, so some coffees would be spiked with phosphoric acid, malic acid, acetic acid or citric acid, and you would have to be able to pick them out.”

“I also had to complete a roast ID test,” Shields explained. “Where you pick out the proper specs of coffee, what’s dark, what is baked [cooked too long at too low of a temperature], as well as four olfactory tests. I literally had to memorize the smells and match scents in a kit of 36 scents.”

This kind of schooling requires participants to truly rely on their noses and trust themselves.

“The course really broadened my horizons on how to describe a coffee, all the different complexities and how to calibrate with other Q graders,” Shields said. “It’s not just saying one tastes like grapefruit or blueberries; its talking about how, when one cools, that brings up the acidity, and learning how to do something as simple as describing coffee better is so cool.”

For those unfamiliar with Grizzly Forge, we highly recommend checking it out. Be sure to look at our sister site, Coffee or Die Magazine, and its piece on Lucas O’Hara. But for the Cliffs Notes, read on.

Grizzly Forge owner and founder, Lucas O’Hara, was born and raised in Georgia. As soon as he was old enough, he joined the Army. After eight years of service, he decided that he would continue serving overseas through contracting. Once he got stateside again, he was trying to find his own path in the civilian world. He tried a blacksmithing class at a local forge, Goat n Hammer, and by the end of the class, he had fallen in love.

For O’Hara, forging knives is more than just a job; it’s an outlet, and something he is more than passionate about. When forging a new bushcraft knife, he ensures the knife is beautiful, yet durable, tough, and can be used in the outdoors. He continues to challenge himself with unique knife designs, and forging new pieces for his clientele.

O’Hara is an artist as much as he's a craftsman. He puts his heart into his work like none other, and we're proud to call him a friend.

Like the man said, put that phone down. Find that thing in your life that helps you re-center, disconnect from the fiasco that is the internet, and engage in something meaningful.
